Our activities > Walking > Ridges and tops walks

During the summer and autumn we have a programme of monthly Saturday walks exploring the ridges and tops of our hills and mountains. These are among the most demanding walks that we do and venture further afield than our normal weekly walks.

These walks are generally of about 7 hours' duration in mountain or moorland areas and typically involve between 9 and 14 miles in distance and 2,000 - 4,000 feet of ascent. They appeal to Sunday 'A' walkers who don't mind climbing hills and getting off the beaten track to explore wide open spaces and to enjoy the panoramas revealed. Come prepared for rough terrain and any kind of weather (good boots with ankle support, no jeans, wind and waterproof over-garment and over-trousers, hat and gloves) and bring enough food and drink for the whole day.

Departure is by mini-bus from Birmingham between 6am and 7am (approx), returning at about 9pm.

There is a charge for the journey out and back, payable on the mini-bus, and booking is essential. Phone Peter Leadbeter whose number is in the published programme.

The length and pace of each walk will depend on territory and height gain.

Since these walks are mostly held in mountainous areas it is essential that members are fully equipped for the adverse weather conditions often encountered, and the leader has authority to refuse to take members considered to be unfit or under-equipped for this type of walk.

All of our walks are listed on the current programme page.

If you would like to join one of our Ridges and Tops walks then contact us using the enquiry page.
